Jason’s musings

I just need a little time

Ah, we all knew it was going to happen, Bill stepping down that is.

I did not get to see tonight's Newsnight program, but I quote the website:

Imagine the world without Microsoft.

It's not easy, if you have anything to do with computers.

My only response can be, actually I do have something to do with computers and it is actually easy to imagine that world. (This is probably a good point to note that I've finally moved to Ubuntu Dapper as my main OS at home).

  1. IMO;
    That’s HORRIBLE FUD (on their part, not yours).
    Microsoft isn’t going away, not without a shift of everything in America.
    The CEO is stepping down. Another will step up. Life will move on.
    Linux won’t rise up to success, though their *may* be a drastic market shift.

  2. Bill, you may have converted to Dapper on your home computer and find it easy to imagine living without microsoft, however, consider this in the workplace. Linux is for servers, not for small, or even large for that matter, businesses. The amount of training it would take for the average user to convert 100% to linux in the workplace is way too outrageous for it to have a place in our near future, or even 10-15 years from now for that matter.

    Microsoft is so amazingly designed for small businesses its not even funny. Also, with a new OS like vista coming out that offers to security of linux coupled with the functionality of windows, linux will remain in the homes and the dark server rooms. It is sad, that people wont convert to linux, because I myself have converted about 90% to linux. This being said, there are just too many things at this point in time that are not found to be supported by linux without a lot of hacking for it to hold up as a microsoft competitor.

  3. Well, If you actually looked at the title of this blog, you’d see that my name is not Bill, it it Jason. Bill being Mr. Bill Gates. Of course it’s going to take a lot of effort to get people to switch to FOSS, but attitudes of people that they can’t imagine a world with out Microsoft won’t help anyone. Vista may be Microsoft’s last release of an operating system, as amongst other factors we are seeing a shift towards web-based software and the operating system is becoming less and less important.

    I don’t know where you get your training cost data, but I would like to see it.

    This is a critical time in personal computing, we are about to see a shift from general purpose computing to closed digital media systems which will lock out free software. We need to be optimistic but also realistic.
